Hi, I'm [personal profile] twistedchick. First language, American English (and Canadian English, which is not exactly the same thing); studied Latin for nearly four years, modern German for two and classical Greek for one. I have picked up a bit of French through online lessons (livemocha), and some Spanish but I'd like more of it. At the moment I'm working my way through lernu.com, which is an Esperanto language site, in order to make it a little easier to get better at modern languages (I tend to have the Latin structures in my head so firmly that they get in the way.) I have also (unsuccessfully) attempted to learn Arabic (lack of follow-through), and Thai (problems with listening to the vowels, as there are sounds that don't exist in English.)

I'm a musician; I felt very disappointed that I couldn't use that kind of skill to learn a tonal language. But at that point it didn't work.

I know, right?!

I learned a bit of Chinese from books but never got the tones - making that knowledge fairly useless for actually speaking or listening!
